Progesterone is a female sex hormone needed to maintain the thick lining of the uterus before embryo implantation to support the early-stage embryo during pregnancy.
Generally, women are prescribed some form of progesterone supplements after egg retrievalfor assisted conception in order to be able to get pregnant and maintain the pregnancy. Progesterone supplements are also sometimes prescribed to women who have experienced repeated miscarriages.
