Semen Analysis

What It Is

Semen analysis is a core laboratory test used to evaluate seminal fluid, including parameters such as volume, sperm concentration, motility and morphology.

Why It Is Performed

It is performed to assess male fertility and identify possible abnormalities that may make conception more difficult.

When It Is Recommended

Semen analysis may be recommended in cases of difficulty conceiving, suspected male factor infertility, before IVF treatment, or as part of follow-up after treatment.

How It Is Performed / Preparation

The test is performed using an ejaculate sample collected after 2 to 5 days of sexual abstinence. Alcohol should also be avoided beforehand.

Because semen parameters can vary naturally, at least two tests are often recommended, with an interval of no less than 30 days between them.
