PREPARING FOR YOUR FIRST BABY

PREPARING FOR YOUR FIRST BABY – WHAT DO YOU NEED?

It’s no secret that raising a child could be expensive. When the time for shopping for your first baby comes, many future parents  panic and forget some essentials or make unnecessary purchases.

THINK IN ADVANCE

The „pink for a girl and a blue for a boy“ rule came into existence in late 20th century. Before then people believed blue was a gentler color and therefore more suitable for girls. And before that things were even simpler – young children wore the same white dress-like garments.

It looks seems that this old trend is back because nowadays more and more parents choose baby items in more neutral colors. From the room to the clothes and the stroller – white, gray and creamy prevail, while brighter colors are just an accent. This might sound a tad boring but at least everything would be suitable for both boys and girls, which is quite practical.

QUALITY INSTEAD OF EXPENSIVE LABELS

Kids don’t really care about fashion, they just want to feel comfortable. Many designer brands offer baby clothes and accessories. The problem is that babies grow up fast and constantly need something new that inevitably affects the family budget. So here are some tips on how to shop smarter:

  1. Choose natural fabrics (cotton, linen, bamboo, merino wool). One exception are blankets can be made of microfiber or fleece, which are ideal for winter.
  2. Think in advance and buy clothes and diapers in different sizes. You will be surprised how fast your babies grow.
  3. Don’t be shy about asking your fellow moms if they have some unused baby clothes. There is a good chance they will be filled with brand new things that are no longer needed.
THE ESSENTIALS

Whether you are planning on throwing a baby shower or not, your relatives and friends will want to buy your baby a gift. It is your decision whether you’d like sentimental or practical gifts – it may be best to have both. Nowadays, most online stores allow you to make a wishlist or a registry. This way instead of wondering, your friends will know exactly what you need.

If you would like to get the essentials for the first weeks of a newborn’s life, we have prepared a relatively short list:

  1. Furniture: bed, car seat, stroller, bathtub ;
  2. Everyday items: diapers (different sizes), bottles, pacifiers, breast pump (optional), breast milk containers, thermometer, high quality baby cosmetics (soap, moisturizer and a cream for diaper rash), gentle detergent, wet wipes, nasal aspirator;
  3. Textile: fitted sheets, soft cotton or bamboo towels, cotton or fleece blankets, bodysuits, pants, blouses and T-shirts, cardigans, gloves, hats, socks, snowsuit for winter babies.

We would like to find out what your tips for your future parents are. And for everyone expecting their first baby – it’s normal to feel unprepared, but we’re sure you’ll do an amazing job!

ОКСИТОЦИН

WHAT IS OXYTOCIN?

OXYTOCIN AND CHILDBIRTH

Oxytocin causes rhythmic contractions of the uterine muscles. Its secretion increases as the cervix dilates. It’s secreted even after the expulsion of the fetus in order to move to the next stage – the birth of the placenta.

Synthetic oxytocin is used when it is necessary to induce birth or stimulate labor. To do the latter, the patient’s cervix should be 6cm dilated.

THE ROLE OF OXYTOCIN IN NURSING

When you’re breastfeeding, oxytocin is released which triggers the movement of the breast milk out and into the baby’s mouth. This is called  „let-down reflex“. Interestingly, this mechanism can be triggered even at the thought of breastfeeding or hearing a baby cry.

Oxytocin released during breastfeeding has been shown to strengthen the bond between the mother and the baby. It slightly raises your body temperature so you may feel warm and thirsty while nursing. It is important to note that oxytocin can’t determine the amount of breastmilk you will produce. This function belongs to prolactin.

Breastfeeding is beneficial not only for the baby but also for the mother. Thanks to the release oxytocin, the uterus is returns to its pre-pregnancy size, there is less bleeding and recovery is faster.

EFFECTS ON EMOTIONS

It has recently been suggested that oxytocin is also an important participant in social behavior. In the brain, oxytocin acts as a neurotransmitter and is responsible for human behavior, including sexual arousal, trust in others, anxiety and, of course, maternal instincts. As a result, oxytocin is called the „hormone of love“.

Many research projects have been undertaken addressing the role of oxytocin in addiction, anorexia and stress, among other topics.

DO YOU NEED PSYCHOLOGICAL COUNSELLING DURING IVF?

Many people view in vitro fertilization as almost as stressful as any other major life event, such as the loss of a loved one or divorce. This is why consulting with a psychotherapist can be extremely helpful at this difficult time in your life.

PSYCHOTHERAPIST VS PSYCHIATRIST  – WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

The topic of mental health remains a taboo. Many believe that the work of psychotherapists is focused on serious psychiatric illnesses (such as schizophrenia). In fact, psychiatrists, who are medical doctors, treat such people.

In many Western countries, seeing a psychotherapist is just as normal as going to the gym. This is due to the fact that psychotherapy focuses on ordinary people and their usual mental health problems.

It is wrong to think that psychotherapists help their clients by prescribing medications. In fact, most psychotherapists are not even medical professionals and help clients through verbal communication and role play. Therefore, their aim is preventing severe mental health issues.

PSYCHOTHERAPY AND IVF

Each patient experiences stress differently based on his or her own personality and life experience. It is quite possible that emotions during an IVF cycle can lead to anxiety, depression and even tension in the relationship with your partner.

There are many ways to deal with the emotional stress that do not require professional help. Sometimes they may be insufficient, which may negatively affect your fertility treatment (for example, severe depression leading to stopping your treatment).

Studies show that the first in vitro fertilization cycle, especially 10-14 day wait between your embryo transfer and pregnancy test, is the most stressful. This period is associated with confusion and fear of a possible negative result. At this point, a psychotherapist can help you cope with your emotions through different techniques.

It is important that your psychotherapist has experience with couples going through fertility treatment. New Life clinic has a psychologist who will provide you with the support you need in difficult times.

АНЕМИЯ ПРИ БРЕМЕННОСТ

ANEMIA DURING PREGNANCY

Anemia during pregnancy -During pregnancy, blood  plasma volume increases by about 20-30% . This leads to the development of a mild anemia, which is easily detected by routine blood tests (whole blood count), but is not a cause for concern.

AM I AT RISK?

In some cases, the risk of developing severe anemia during pregnancy is increased:

  1. Getting pregnant soon after a previous pregnancy;
  2. Being pregnant with twins or triplets;
  3. Low iron intake due to poor nutrition;
  4. Heavy menstrual bleeding before becoming pregnant.
SYMPTOMS

Symptoms typical for anemia include fatigue, irritability, shortness of breath, palpitations, chest pain, cold limbs, difficult concentration, pale skin, brittle nails.

IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA

This type of anemia is the most common one. It is caused by insufficient intake or increased loss of iron (eg bleeding). We need iron to create hemoglobin. When your body lacks iron,  formation of new erythrocytes is very difficult.

 As the condition develops slowly, the body manages to adapt to some extent, the symptoms are too nonspecific to pay attention to and are often explained by other causes. Usually iron deficiency anemia is already present before the woman becomes pregnant. During pregnancy, when the body’s iron needs are higher, the condition may worsen.

This is dangerous for both the fetus and the mother. Severe anemia could lead to preterm birth, low birth weight, and anemia during infancy. For the mother, the risks are associated with greater blood loss during childbirth and decreased immunity.

PREVENTION WITH DIET

There are two types of iron – heme and non-heme. Heme iron is found in meat and is easier to digest. Non-heme iron is found in eggs, milk and plant foods and is more difficult to digest. Therefore, vegetarians and vegans are at a risk of developing iron deficiency anemia.

Take serious care of your diet if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Include in your menu foods rich in iron such as green leafy vegetables (spinach), red meat, eggs, nuts, tofu. Iron is best absorbed in the presence of vitamin C (citrus fruits, tomatoes, peppers, kiwis, strawberries). If prenatal multivitamins and dietary changes are not able to help with your iron deficiency, you will be prescribed a special iron supplement. Depending on the severity of your condition, you may be referred to a hematologist.

ИЗБОР НА ЛЕКАР

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR DOCTOR?

Everyone strives to receive the highest quality medical help. However, sometimes it is quite difficult to decide which doctor to go to. In this article, we have provided some tips to help you choose your doctor.

INTERNET ISN’T ALWAYS HELPFUL

The internet is full of groups and pages that discuss the skills of doctors of all specialties. You can often come across conflicting opinions about the same person, which is very confusing. Our advice is to approach these materials very critically because it is not always certain how credible they are. Moreover, everyone will have a different experience depending on their attitude towards their appointment.

Instead, look for more information about additional training, qualifications, and interests that a doctor has. If they match your problem – trust them,  it is very likely that they’ll be able to help you.

DOES HEALTH INSURANCE COVER IT?

We are all required to pay for our health insurance. For some social groups, such as children, students up to 26 years and retired people, health insurance is covered by the state. This gives us the advantage of getting a referral to see a specialist. Sometimes it takes more time, but it’s a way to save yourself a lot of money.

Before you make an appointment, you need to ask if your doctor of choice has a contract with the National Health Insurance Fund. If not, don’t be ashamed to ask about the cost of the procedure you need.

DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE YOUNG DOCTORS

Recently trained physicians may not have that much experience, but they are certainly up to date with the latest innovations in medicine. They are more likely to attend conferences and additional training to learn about the most up-to-date practices. Do not underestimate or exclude them as an option for your next visit.

A DOCTOR YOU CAN TRUST

There is one popular saying that you should tell and show everything to your doctor. This means that you should not hide important details if you want the right diagnosis and treatment. When you are at the doctor’s office, pay attention to how you’re feeling. Is it easy for you to share your concerns with your doctor? Doctor-patient relationships should go smoothly, especially when you’ll have to pay multiple visits as it is with in vitro fertilization.

MISCARRIAGES: CAUSES, SYMPTOMS AND EMOTIONAL SUPPOR

Miscarriage is one of the worst complications of pregnancy. Although nearly 20% of pregnancies end this way, it still remains taboo.

A miscarriage is the loss of a fetus before it is able to live outside the uterus (20 weeks). There is early (up to 12 weeks) and late (after 12 weeks) miscarriage.

 CAUSES

The main cause of a miscarriage are chromosomal defects in the fetus. They usually occur after fertilization and are not inherited by the parents.

 On the mother’s part, the cause may be related to old age, various diseases (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, thrombophilia, etc.), traumas, infections, smoking, alcohol use. There is also a risk of miscarriage when the father works with heavy metals and other dangerous substances.

Moderate exercise, sex and work (unless it involves harmful chemicals) will not  lead to a miscarriage.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

The symptoms of a miscarriage depend on how advanced the pregnancy is. Sometimes it can occur so early that it could be misinterpreted for a delayed menstruation, a.k.a chemical pregnancy. Symptoms of miscarriage include:

  1. Spotting or heavy bleeding, which can range from bright red to brown;
  2. Low abdominal or back pain;

These symptoms are not specific to miscarriages. Many women report mild bleeding at the beginning of pregnancy, but manage to give birth to completely healthy babies. However, if this occurs, you should contact your obstetrician immediately. Better safe than sorry.

TREATMENT

If diagnosed early enough (in the „threatened abortion“ phase when the cervix is intact), treatment may be attempted. In other cases, termination of pregnancy is the standard approach. If the patient’s blood type is Rh-negative, anti-D gamma globulin is also administered. If desired, oral contraceptives can be started immediately after the procedure or during your next menstruation.

EMOTIONAL SUPPORT

Unfortunately, miscarriage can happen to any expecting mother. Losing a much-desired baby is equivalent to losing a loved one. It is completely natural to mourn despite encouraging comments from loved ones that „you will have another baby“. It is just as normal to seek support from family and friends, or to need some solitude.

Don’t blame yourself for what happened. The reasons for most miscarriages are beyond our control and cannot be predicted. The probability that this will happen again with your next pregnancy is very low – about 1%.

Give yourself plenty of time to recover physically as well as mentally before attempting to get pregnant again. Even if it seems impossible, remember that this dark period will pass at some point.

If you have any other concerns or just need professional advice and support, our psychologist at New Life Medical Center is here to help you.
