Can I afford IVF?

We know that the cost of IVF is a hindrance for many of you in the pursuit of your dream to become parents. However, it is also important to remember that the success rate of IVF is much higher for women below 35 and therefore 1 IVF cycle done on time is better than more cycles done late. The purpose of this article is to inform you of all the external sources of funding for assisted reproductive procedures.

The Center for Assisted Reproduction (CAR), also known as “the Fund”, finances IVF cycles (up to 5000 lv/cycle) of couples and single women, Bulgarian citizens or permanent residents, who have medical indications for IVF, described in detail on the official website of CAR. The application documents are filed by the IVF center where the patients would like to do their procedure. New Life fertility center has a contract with CAR. While so far CAR subsidized up to 3 IVF cycles per couple, on 17th May 2017 the Prime Minister Boiko Borisov announced that CAR will finance an unlimited number of IVF cycles per couple. The number of cycles will be determined solely by the physicians and the state budget for assisted reproduction will not be fixed. At the moment it is not known when those changes would become effective but that is expected to happen by 2018.

This news gives a lot of hope to couples who have already done their 3 IVF cycles financed by CAR as well as to those who have not, because the waiting period for approval is expected to be cut from about a year to 6 months.

In order to apply for financial support for assisted reproduction from the Plovdiv Municipal fund you need to be a couple (married or not), to have medical indications for IVF, to be Bulgarian citizens with permanent address in the Municipality of Plovdiv for the last 3 years, without tax debts or debts to the municipality. Although it has more requirements towards candidate, the Plovdiv Municipal fund finances not only the IVF procedure itself but also the compulsory tests preceding it (semen analysis, serology testing for HIV, HBV, HCV, etc.), even if the financial assistance is smaller (up to 1 000 lv.). This gives patients in a difficult financial situation the chance to apply for CAR funding for the IVF procedure itself and for municipal funding to cover the cost of the tests before the procedure.
