WHEN YOU NEED TO USE SPERM DONATION

WHEN YOU NEED TO USE SPERM DONATION: YOUR PARTNER’S REACTION

Infertility means that a couple has been trying to get pregnant for at least one year without success. This can be due to health issues in both the woman and the man. In nearly half of the cases, the reason  is male factor for infertility.

Although about 50% of couples with reproductive problems suffer from a male factor for infertility, men are generally less likely to undergo fertility assessment. One reason for this is the misconception that male infertility is associated with impotence or decreased masculinity.

IN WHICH CASES DO YOU NEED DONOR SPERM?

Male infertility can be due to a variety of factors, which include genetic disorders, illnesses, injuries, medications, as well as some general aspects of health and lifestyle. These factors may contribute to problems related to spermatogenesis and semen production.

WHAT REACTIONS COULD YOU EXPECT FROM YOUR PARTNER?

The inability to have biological children fundamentally changes the live of every person, regardless of their gender. Ever since ancient times, the greatest “proof” of manhood has been the ability to continue the bloodline. Therefore, the need for donor sperm can generate a whole spectrum of emotions in your partner.

Some men tend to agree with this option, while others take the news quite hard and may even get depressed. Undoubtedly, the shock is much more pronounced in men who have just found out that they are suffering from infertility. Quite often, the partner feels helpless, unnecessary, and as if he has failed his wife. Guided by a sense of guilt, some men would even think about separation despite having a pretty solid relationship.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

Whatever the response of your partner is, open communication is the way to finding a solution. This will probably be one of the most difficult conversations you will ever have because it affects not only you but your future child as well. Here are some tips on how you approach the situation:

– Talk when both of you are well-rested. Fatigue can significantly worsen the discussion.

– Talk about your feelings. Does your partner agree with you getting pregnant with donor sperm? How would he feel about raising a child who is not genetically related to him? What would you tell your family, friends, and one day your child?

– Try to be empathetic. Before you say anything that would hurt your partner, try putting yourself in his shoes.

– Seek professional help. A psychologist can be a great mediator when we need to have a serious conversation. With their help, you and your partner will be able to reach the solution that best meets the requirements of your relationship.

DONOR EGGS – PRACTICE NOWADAYS

DONOR EGGS AS AN EVEN MORE COMMON PRACTICE NOWADAYS

Donor eggs provide the unique opportunity for women who for some reason do not respond to ovarian hyperstimulation to achieve a successful pregnancy. Showing extremely encouraging results, these days using donor eggs has become a common practice.

WHO NEEDS DONOR EGGS?

The use of donor eggs is offered to in vitro patients when they do not respond well to ovarian stimulation or when their eggs are abnormal, which does not allow them to be used for assisted reproduction. The most common reason for using donor eggs is related to natural age-related decline in ovarian function.

WHAT ARE MY CHANCES OF GETTING PREGNANT USING DONOR EGGS?

The quality of donor eggs is of paramount importance to the success of the in vitro procedure. For this reason, there are strict requirements for women who wish to donate eggs. On the other hand, the overall health of the recipient is important for a successful pregnancy.

Egg donors are young women up to 35 years old, in excellent health, who have given birth to at least one healthy child. Before donating eggs, they undergo a series of tests – for the most common genetic and transmissible diseases (HIV, Hepatitis B and C, syphilis, chlamydia, cytomegalovirus). Further testing for other genetic diseases can be done after genetic consultation with a specialist to determine the need for such and their type. Of course, this will make the procedure more expensive. As a patient, you should be aware that doing the mentioned above tests does not fully guarantee the prevention of genetic diseases.

WILL MY BABY LOOK LIKE ME?

Unless the egg donor is your relative (such as your sister), you and your baby will not be genetically related. However, this should not discourage you. There is strong evidence to support the mother’s influence on the fetus who’s developing in her womb. Uterine environment is essential for the proper development of the brain, immune system and metabolic health of the baby. This is done by secretion of various substances from the endometrium (the innermost layer of the uterus). Last but not least, emotions and stress during pregnancy can also have an effect on your baby.

That is why a healthy lifestyle and early diagnosis and prevention of pathological conditions are the main prerequisites for the birth of a healthy and happy baby.
